PROFILE - Karel Schwarzenberg: prince, who conquered the Czech politics


PRAGUE (MEDIAFAX) - Karel Schwarzenberg - full name Karl Johannes Nepomuk Josef Norbert Friedrich Antonius Wratislaw Mena von Schwarzenberg -'s deputy and foreign minister, was Chancellor of President Vaclav Havel, a senator, and as he set the box Occupation: forestry and landlord. He was the eldest child of Prince Schwarzenberg sixth (19111986) and his wife Antonia, Princess of Fürstenberg. Full title of Prince of Schwarzenberg, Duke of Krumlov, Count von Schultz and Landgrave kleggavský.

Born in Prague Bubeneč 10th December 1937. He spent his childhood in Prague, Orlik and Cimelice. After the communist coup in 1948 along with his parents left the republic. Graduated in Vienna and continued studying law first in Vienna, then in Graz and studied forestry in Munich.In 1962 he was adopted by a member of the older Hlubocko-Krumlov branch Schwarzenberg, Henry. This act greatly influenced his subsequent life. In 1965, when his adoptive father died, he had to leave the studio and start managing the family property in Austria and Bavaria. Therefore, as well as their profession often indicates forester / landlord. In 1979 Karel receive the inheritance of Joseph's adoptive uncle and became the main representative of the Schwarzenberg family.

Although, from the youth lived in Czechoslovakia, he tried to help return democracy to their country. After the suppression of the Prague Spring supported Czechoslovak dissent. Since that time, also dated his friendship with ex-president Vaclav Havel. The family castle in Bavarian Scheinfeld founded Czechoslovak Documentation Centre, a sort of archive where forbidden literature. Today it is part of the collection of the National Museum and is stored in Prague.

After November 1989, he returned to his homeland and then Vaclav Havel appointed him his chancellor. The function left after Havel's abdication in 1992. In November 2004 he was in his constituency elected Senator Prague 6 (a period of six years, nominated US-DEU). Until her death was a member of ODA, then was politically independent. In domestic matters dealt shun public conflicts.

It has become a central concern human rights. In 1984 he was elected President of the International Helsinki Committee for Human Rights, which was in 1990. In 1989, together with Lech Wałęsa awarded the Human Rights Prize of the Council of Europe. He also became a member of the Forum in 2000, founded by Václav Havel, Japanese philanthropist Yohei Sasakawa, and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel.In European circles, where he lectured often defended the interests of new countries in Europe, and especially the Czech Republic.

Minister of Foreign Affairs was appointed the ninth January 2007. His nomination had sharply criticized President Vaclav Klaus. He argued that such an important post, according to him does not stand a man who spent most of his life in Austria. Moreover, apparently not held in mutual relations uniquely Czech position. In these words, shortly before the presidential election in February 2008 Schwarzenberg publicly apologized.

In June 2009, Schwarzenberg became chairman of the preparatory committee of the newly formed political party TOP 09 The constituent assembly November of the same year was elected chairman of Top 09 profit 99.4 percent of the vote, when he was the only one who did not give in his voice.

In elections to the House of Commons in 2010, won the Top 09 under his leadership 16.7 percent and became the third most successful party. In the lower parliamentary chamber occupied 41 seats. Schwarzenberg was the leader in Prague, where he also obtained the highest number of preferential votes of all candidates. Subsequently TOP 09 entered into a coalition government of Petr Necas with ODS and things public. Karel Schwarzenberg and again became a member of the government in the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs, and most recently, the First Vice-President.

In September 2011, with the support of his party TOP 09, decided to run for President of the Czech Republic. This summer has published the opinion that if you fail, so in politics until 2014 ends.

Karel Schwarzenberg married in 1967 with Teresa, a descendant of noble family von Hardegg. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1988, but again, they got married in 2008. Together they have three children. Jan Nepomuk (1967), Anna Carolina (b. 1968, married. "Morgan") and Charles Philip (* 1979 Adopt. "Prinzhorn").
