Beef strongly more expensive due to dwindling supplies

ColosseumYesterday's rise in cattle futures (live cattle) was the strongest in the last six months. The reason is the decreasing number of cattle in the U.S., and growing demand for U.S. beef Party of Japan. This year is likely therefore to a paradoxical situation, exports of beef from the U.S. reaches record while beef production drops to nine minima. Japan was the biggest buyer of U.S. beef before 2003, when a so-called mad cow disease. At that time, imports of U.S. beef banned. In recent years, however, a gradual loosening of prohibitions and import beef from Japan is growing again. April cattle closed yesterday on the CME to rise by 2% to 133.40 cents per pound of weight.
