Greek protesters clashed with police, injuring a former minister (December 15, 2010)

ATHENS (MEDIAFAX) - A strike in Greece against government austerity measures in the middle of the wave of violence will escalate. Protesters in Athens clashed with police and injuring a former Transport Minister, informs Reuters.

Police intervened several times against the protesting crowd with tear gas after a group of rioters threw firebombs at two luxury hotels in central Syntagma Square, close to Parliament. On one of the balconies of the hotel began even burn.

Rioters also torched several cars. Center of Athens was full of smoke and fight on the streets on Wednesday afternoon lasted more than an hour.

Several demonstrators also attacked the former Conservative Transport Minister Hatzidakis Kostise as he left the parliament building. With the words "Thieves! Shame on you!" after they started throwing stones Hatzidakis and sticks beat him until he could escape to a nearby building.

According to witnesses exministrova face was covered in blood.

The streets of Athens on Wednesday marched about 40 000 discontented Greeks, who chanted slogans such as "Mutiny!" or "Let's change the government action". Police arrested at least ten people. Three people suffered injuries during the violence.

"People already have enough. Their anger is so great that no one can stop," Ilias Iliopoulos sent a message of union ADEDY. "This is only a warning of what might happen after the Christmas holidays," said Iliopoulos.

Greece strike virtually paralyzed. It does not work public transport, closed schools, government offices and other public institutions.

In exchange for a rescue loan of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union (EU), Greece is committed to tame the high budget deficit and take a number of reforms and austerity measures.
