Greek unions convened a two-day general strike in protest against the savings (June 25, 2011)

ATHENS (MEDIAFAX) - Greek trade unionists convened a two-day general strike to protest against cuts and unpopular reforms. The strike will take place at a time when there will be a Parliament-saving package, ie on 28 and 29 June, AFP informed.

"With regard to voting on the medium-term budget plan agreed by the government with its greedy lenders, we have decided to convene a 48-hour strike for 28 and 29 June, "said GSEE trade union center, which represents the interests of private sector employees. The fourth general strike this year will involve the union ADEDY, bringing together public sector employment.

The last 24-hour general strike in the country took place only recently, in mid-June.

Greek Parliament should be the end of June to vote on five-year program worth saving 28 billion euros (675.5 billion CZK). It also includes tax increases, privatization, layoffs in government and public sector and reducing social benefits.

It approved a new round of savings cuts and international creditors, ie the European Union (EU) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) makes payment of the fifth tranche of 12 billion euros (289.5 billion CZK) from the rescue package. Without these funds the Athens find themselves insolvent.

At the beginning of May last year, Greece became the first EU country to be agreed with the EU and the IMF for financial assistance. This should help to solve the dismal state of Greek public finances. In exchange for a rescue package worth 110 billion euros (2.7 trillion CZK) countries pledged to take a number of austerity measures and cuts, which include a reduction in government salaries, pensions and reduction of tax increases. With the cuts but their unions do not agree that held a number of strikes and protests.

But the austerity measures deepened the economic recession the country. Greek gross domestic product (GDP) in the first quarter of this year fell by 5.5 percent. The decrease was stronger than originally expected.
