Venezuela is a full member of Mercosur

BRASILIA (MEDIAFAX) - After six years of waiting Venezuela officially became a member of the Latin American Free Trade Association Mercosur. Tuesday's ceremony in Brazil, attended by Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, informs AFP.

Venezuela was not only an associate member. Full acceptance allow suspension of membership Paraguay. The regional government has blocked the ratification process because of doubts about the democratic Venezuelan government. After impeachment Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo, which most countries of Latin America condemned as a coup, but Paraguay was temporarily excluded from decision making.

Not all are breakthrough enthusiasm. "The adoption highly sought government of President Chavez. Though I do not know if it perceives the rest of Venezuela," said Fernando Gerbasi, a former Venezuelan ambassador to Brazil.

"Brazil and Argentina are far larger economy than Venezuela, greatly diversified. Venezuela is narrowly focused on the production and export of oil and oil derivatives. So I do not know how we will stand in the competition," he explained.

For Chavez, the ceremonial introduction of Venezuela into Mercosur double victory. Means for him at the same time return to the international scene after cancer treatment.

Acceptance into Mercosur also can use in their election campaign. In October, the battle for the presidency with the opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.

Membership Venezuela is particularly advantageous for Brazil. Bilateral trade of the two countries last year reached a value of nearly $ 6 billion (123 billion dollars). Some commentators, however, believe that the members of Mercosur decision was more political than economic.

Mercosur was established in 1991. Besides the four founding countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) also counts associated with five countries: Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Adoption Venezuelan representatives of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay endorsed the 30th June, just a week after overthrowing the Paraguayan president, which led to the suspension of membership of that State.
