CSO: Farmers harvest this year by 20.7 percent less wheat than last year

PRAGUE (MEDIAFAX) - The production of basic cereals in the Czech Republic this year compared to last year will fall by 20.7 percent to 5,716 tons. This follows from the information on Monday the Czech Statistical Office (CSO), which published its second estimate of the harvest at 15 July.

"The expected production of basic cereals, owing to unfavorable weather during the vegetation falls year on year one thousand tons for 1490 to 5716 thousand tons, a decrease of 20.7 percent," said Director of Statistics Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment Office Jiří Hrbek.

According to him this year's harvest and below the five-year average (-5.7 percent). It will probably be the lowest harvest since 2007. Areas of basic cereals to 2011, decreased by two percent, decreased area of ??winter crops, which have been partly replaced by spring cereals."Expected average yield of 4.32 tons of basic cereals is significantly lower than in the previous year, namely by 19.1 percent," said Hrbek.

The most significant decline in production is expected in winter wheat. The estimated 3322 harvest of one thousand tons in comparison with last year about one thousand tons lower in 1338 (-28.7 percent). This reduction is in addition affected by CSO smaller sown area (-7.4 percent), mainly a sharp decline in yield per hectare to 4.45 tons (-23 percent). Also in spring barley Statistical Office expects lower 1227 production of below-average one thousand tons (-8.9 percent) in yield of 4.31 tons (-12.9 percent) and the current expansion of sown area by 4.5 percent.
