Nokia stays afloat cheap basic phones

Finnish Nokia, which is fighting in recent quarters for its survival in the world of smart phones, gets a bit of time due to the success in the segment of cheap basic phones offered from 39USD per piece.
Sales of the cheapest phones surpass sales of smart devices in the case of Nokia in the ratio 7:1. During the quarter, the Finnish company has sales of around 70 million phones cheap. Proceeds from the sale are involved in the total sales of 49%.

Nokia shares were better off since mid-July, a full 66%, however, from the first performance of a rival Apple's iPhone in 2007, still losing around 89%.

If Nokia fails to effectively jump on the bandwagon of smartphones, cheap devices division will probably one of the few attractive divisions for a possible sale. Cheap phones from Nokia often have a dominant position in emerging markets. In this segment, Nokia's market share rose from 29 to 35%. Remarkable success are basic inexpensive models with touch control. In the segment of smartphones Nokia's share fell to 10%.

The problem in the future in the segment of cheap phones will be increasing competition, which pushes prices further down, and also compresses the manufacturing margin. The average price of cheap handsets from Nokia in the fourth quarter decreased by 14%.
