Czech Republic - Retail in July stagnated due to the continuing decline in sales of food

Sales in the automotive segment, adjusted for seasonal factors fell in July at constant prices by 0.8% yoy adjusted for the number of working days decreased by 1.5%. Adjusted sales grew by 0.3%, driven by the higher number of working days growth automotive segment and non-food goods.

Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles in July dropped by 0.8% yoy adjusted for working days decreased by 1.5%. Yoy sales growth without adjustment of 0.3% was due to one day a higher number of working days this year compared to July 2011. The increase in sales was recorded sales in the automotive segment and non-food products, food sales, they fell (see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) decreased in real terms by 2.0% yoy adjusted for working days by 2.2%. Seasonally adjusted sales grew by 0.8%, of which repairs by 1.0% and sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) of 0.8%.

In retail sales including automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices decreased by 0.3% yoy adjusted for working days by 1.1%. Seasonally adjusted sales were flat year on year despite the fact that the sale of fuel and non-food items recorded growth (2.2%, respectively. 2.0%). Growth of retail sales decline defended food sales by 3.3%.

Year-fastest growing sales over the internet or via mail order houses (13.0%). Sales also increased in specialized stores clothing and footwear (7.7%), computer and communication equipment (3.0%), products for culture and recreation (-2.8%), pharmaceutical, medical and cosmetic goods ( 1.8%) and household products (by 0.1%). Stagnation in retail sales influenced mainly by the decrease of sales in both specialized and non-specialized stores with food (+3.7%, respectively. 3.3%). Sales of food retailers in current prices fell by 1.1%.

Price deflator (CZ-NACE 47) to the corresponding period of the previous year (excluding VAT) stood at 100.5% and was influenced mainly by higher prices of fuel and food. On the contrary, prices continued to drop in stores of information and communication equipment.
