CSO: Farmers reap a fifth this year, less grain and corn than last year

PRAGUE (MEDIAFAX) - Production of basic cereals including maize grain in the Czech Republic this year compared to last year, dropping by 20.9 percent to 6,539 tons. It results from Friday's information the Czech Statistical Office (CSO), which released its estimate of harvest at 15 September.

"For cereals, including maize grain harvest expected third lowest in the last ten years," said Director of Statistics Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Environmental CSO George Hrbek. According to his words on this significant reduction in wheat production contributes most significantly (-1,335 thousand tonnes) and maize grain (-280,000 tons). The total sown area of ??cereals against 2011 declined by 1.8 percent, but well below their expected average yield of 4.56 tons (-19.6 percent).

In comparison with last year is estimated also lower harvest root crops, sugar beet of 3450 thousand tons (-11.5 percent) and potatoes of 654,000 tons (-18.8 percent). The increase in production is expected according to the CSO contrast with green maize and silage by 6.7 percent to 8,307 thousand tonnes.

Production of rape will be higher this year (+7.7 percent), against the expected decrease in harvest sunflower (-23 percent) and poppy (-41.7 percent).

Harvest green maize and silage is expected yoy higher. Sown area increased by 17,000 ha (+8.8 percent) to 215,000.

"This year's harvest was below average, sometimes fertile regions in Moravia were affected by drought. Farmers wishing to offset at least 750 million," he is heard on Wednesday Vaclav Hlavacek, chairman of the South Moravian Chamber of Agriculture.
