Czech Republic - Retail in December grew by 1.3% yoy but declined by 0.4%


Sales in the automotive segment, adjusted for seasonal factors rose in December at constant prices by 1.3%. Year on year sales adjusted for the number of working days decreased by 0.4%, not seasonally adjusted by 5.1%. YoY decline in non-adjusted sales were affected by fewer working days, which was in December 2012 by three less than in the same month of the 2011th
For the full year 2012, sales in the automotive segment declined in real terms by 1.1% yoy.

Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles in December at constant prices increased by 1.3%. Yoy revenues adjusted for the number of working days decreased by 0.4%, not seasonally adjustedby 5.1%. The decrease in revenues was due to lower sales assortments sensitively responsive to the differing number of working days (in December 2012 had three working days less than in 2011). Most notably lower number of working days reflected in sale and repair of motor vehicles.

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) increased by 1.5% mom. Yoy adjusted for the number of working days decreased by 2.9%. Seasonally adjusted sales dropped by 11.1% , of which 12.3% of the repair and sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) of 10.8%.

In retail sales including automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47), seasonally adjusted sales rose by 1.2% month on month and year on year adjusted for the number of working days by 0.5%. Unadjustedsales decreased by 3.0%, sales of food by 3.3%, non-food goods by 3.0% and fuel by 1.8%.

The decrease was involved in most of the surveyed product groups of stores, most selling household goods in specialized stores (down 7.5%) and food in non-specialized stores (-2.7%). It also reduced the sale of food in specialized stores by 10.7%, pharmaceutical, medical and cosmetic products by 6.0% and products for culture, sport and recreation by 1.3%. After a relatively strong growth in the previous two months, decreased sales of computer and communication equipment by 1.5%. Sales grew only on goods sold over the Internet or through mail order houses (6.9%) and clothing and footwear stores (+6.6%).

The largest retailers with a predominance of food sales at current prices reached sales in December of 2011, and especially significant drop in sales of non-food goods.

Price deflator (CZ-NACE 47) to the corresponding period of the previous year (excluding VAT) amounted to 99.5%. Compared to November 2012 decreased by 0.6 percentage points year on year growth in prices was recorded for food, fuel, cosmetics and dry goods, while the majority of non-food goods prices continued to drop, the most in the range of computer and communications equipment.

Developments in 2012

For the full year 2012, sales in the automotive segment (CZ-NACE 45 +47) decreased in real terms by 1.1% yoy, decreases for both the automotive segment and the retail sector.

In the automotive segment (CZ-NACE 45) salesactually decreased by 2.3%, of which 3.5% of repair and sale of motor vehicles by 2.1%. Maintenance and repair of motor vehicles remained in all quarters of 2012, below the comparable period in 2011, the sale of motor vehicles grew only in the first quarter.

In retail sales including automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) sales fell in real terms by 0.5% year on year, growth was recorded only in the first quarter, in August and October. The decline in food sales, which started in May 2011, continued in 2012 (for the year by 2.5%). Sales of fuel throughout the year decreased by 1.0%. Sales of non-food goods increased by 0.9%. The highest growth was recorded in the sales of goods sold via the Internet or mail order houses (8.2%).The most specialized stores, sales of computer and communication equipment (-5.8%) and clothing and footwear (5.6%), as well as for products for sport, culture and recreation (3.0%) and pharmaceutical, medical and cosmetic products (by 1.2%). On the contrary, less selling household goods (1.8%). Average price deflator for the year 2012 amounted to 101.0% and was most influenced by the prices of fuel and food.
