U.S. - The number of newly started buildings and single-family building permits in January at the 4-year maximum


Number of new housing starts in the U.S. fell in January to 890,000 units, compared with December's 973,000 home. Market allowed for a smaller decline to around 920,000 units in the overall estimates range from 870 000 to 1 million.

Number of new construction single-family homes in January rose to 613,000 units compared to December's 608,000 units, the highest since July 2008.
The number of newly initiated multi-generational homes including rental housing fell by 21.4% to 277,000 units in annual terms.

The number of housing starts fall by 50% in the Midwest and 35.3% in the Northeast. West grew by 16.7% and 4.1% in the South.

For the full year 2012, work began on the construction of 779,900, corresponding to a growth of 28.1% over 2011.

Number of new building permits issued in January rose to 925,000 units in annual terms, which was the highest since June 2008. The market had expected about 920,000 permits.
