Czech Republic - Retail in January grew by 0.4%, the highest growth of Internet sales for 2 years

Sales in the automotive segment, adjusted for seasonal factors rose in January at constant prices by 0.4%. Year on year sales adjusted for the number of working days decreased by 0.5%, the same as without purification. YoY decline in revenues was mainly the development of sales in the automotive segment.

Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles in January at constant prices increased by 0.4% yoy adjusted for the number of working days decreased by 0.5%, the same decline experienced sales without purification. Annual decrease for the same number of working days in January this year and last year were affected by lower sales in the automotive segment, while contributing to alleviate the growth in retail trade (see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales insale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) at constant prices were flat yoy adjusted for the number of working days and seasonally adjusted sales dropped by 3.5%. Adjusted year on year sales of motor vehicles (including spare parts) decreased by 4.1% and 1.1% of repairs.

In retail sales including automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices increased by 0.4% yoy adjusted for the number of working days by 0.7%, the same as non purification. The sales growth of non-food goods by 1.9% and food by 0.1%, while sales of fuels decreased by 2.2%.

Fastest growing sales via the Internet and mail order houses (23.7%).The total growth also contributed to higher sales of computer and communication equipment (4.6%), pharmaceutical, medical and cosmetic products (by 4.5%) and clothing and footwear (1.4%). Sales in non-specialized stores with food, where they have the greatest influence large retail chains, increased by 0.3% (businesses with 100 or more employees in this group grew by 0.7%). By contrast, in specialized stores with food sales decreased by 2.5%, lower consumer interest also recorded stores with products for culture, sport and recreation (2.7%) and household equipment (1.2%).

Price deflator (CZ-NACE 47) to the corresponding period of the previous year (excluding VAT) amounted to 99.8%. Compared to December 2012 increased by 0.3 percentage pointsThe annual price growth was recorded for food and pharmaceutical, medical and cosmetic products, while most non-food goods prices continued to drop, most notably in the range of computer and communications equipment.

Beginning from January 2013 as there was a change in the basis of short-term statistics. In addition to changes in the base period of indices that point to the average of 2005, the newly measured against the average of the year 2010, there was also the use of the weighting scheme of 2010.In accordance with the methodology of Eurostat, the new scales made retroactive conversion to 2009, which resulted in a revision of basic and annual indices.
